Stepping into Blue Tree Wellness Center was like walking into a high-end spa. Gray marble tiles covered the floor, and beautiful hand fans in muted natural colors adorned a wall opposite a fountain of copper and stone. A woman sat behind an ornate desk with living bamboo paneling. The air smelled vaguely of frankincense, and the rhythmic beats of meditation music played gently in the background.

An older woman in a pink tracksuit stood at the desk, speaking in harsh tones to the receptionist. “You tell Dr. Poole she better call me soon. If not, she’s going to have a lot more to worry about than a few broken appointments.”

She turned and grimaced, marching out without an upward glance.

Winter’s boots squeaked as she approached the desk. The scowl on the receptionist’s face flipped into a friendly, close-lipped smile when she spotted Winter. She was petite, with black hair cut at her shoulders and baby bangs. Her large eyes were so dark, light seemed to fall into them. Her skin was pale with no warmth of blush. A placard on the desk displayed her name. Cybil Kerie.

“Hello, I’m Cybil. How can I help you?”

“Hi. I’m here to speak with Dr. Poole.”

“Do you have an appointment?”

Winter shook her head and lightly ran the tip of her fingers over the bamboo growing in front of the desk. “I’m here on a personal matter. If she could spare just a few minutes, it would be very much appreciated.”

“Umm.” Cybil put a short but well-manicured fingernail on her bottom lip. “She’s booked this afternoon, but she might be willing to speak with you on her break between appointments. I’ll ask her when she’s finished with the current session, if you’d like to wait.”

“Thank you.” Winter took a seat in one of the waiting chairs—soft and squishy and so comfortable, she was tempted to rest her head back and close her eyes.

“Might I get you anything to drink?” Cybil stepped out from behind her desk. She was a tiny woman, no more than five feet tall and with bones like a bird. “Water, sparkling water, coffee, tea?”

“Water would be great, thank you.”

Cybil left the room, and Winter nabbed a few of Dr. Ava Poole’s business cards and pocketed them before the receptionist returned with a frosted glass bottle. She handed it to Winter and returned to her desk.

Winter cracked open the lid and took a deep drink. “Have you been working here long?”

“About three months now, I guess.”

“Do you like it?”

“It’s a great place to work. The mental health benefits can’t be beat.”

Winter smiled at the joke. “Are you very interested in mental health?”

“Oh, yes.” Cybil’s cool face brightened. “I’ve always been fascinated by the human mind and neuroscience. Why we do what we do.”

“So have I, in a different discipline. I imagine you’d be interested in working as a therapist?”

Winter planned to chitchat at first before warming up to the questions she really wanted answers to.

“Someday, absolutely, when I get a string of letters after my name.
